Some of our OLD Free range HENS have reached the age where they have no more eggs.. or very few… that’s about 4-5 years old, which, is pretty good going..
They call it Henopause *grin* I’m sure many of us know the symptoms?
I’ve bought in a new batch of day old layers that I am rearing to take over, (this is at least a 5 month project), then I have to make a plan on what to do with the OLD FAITHFULS.
My dream has always been to fence off an area in our forest and make an “Old age home for hens”. This may sound silly and sentimental, but its not. I’d like to send the old hens down there with some big roosters and make them tree houses and safe houses where they can perhaps raise me some REALLY TOUGH babies.
Survival of the fittest was how Mike Bosch actually developed this breed. Chickens adapt to their local surroundings by learning about the dangers in their immediate environment and then passing on this knowledge to their offspring. Totally Amazing! Perhaps I’ll dye my hair purple and make myself a cool tree house down there too.. 🙂
